lower socioeconomic status correlated with greater purchasing of junk food. #FileAwayForLater

New brief published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine finds that:

Low-socioeconomic status supermarket shoppers purchase calories in inexpensive forms that are higher in fat and less nutrient-rich.

Not much of a surprise, but still useful to see social science drawing these links.

  1. Did you see the John Tierney piece about decision fatigue and blood sugar, and how poor people eat more sugar while shopping because they’re more stressed about spending $$$? Really fascinating, and well worth looking up. Explains so much about Cinnabon.

    1. Ha, I didn’t see that specific piece, but I do talk a little (I think; I DID do the research, though it might have gotten cut out) about decision fatigue. Sometimes I get so overwhelmed in the store!
